Profile of System
Washington Parish Public Transit (WPPT) has been operating since July, 1983. The system
began services with one van and has grown to a fleet of nine vehicles. Most vehicles are
lift-equipped. The system provides accessible public transit for all ages, income levels
and populations.
The agency has an aggressive growth plan and is determined to meet the transportation
needs of our citizens. Trips are provided within Washington Parish throughout all
communities. Common destinations are to medical facilities, businesses, work sites, senior
centers, youth activities, church services and other important community functions. A
subscription service for students traveling to Southeastern Louisiana University began in
August 1998. The bus is available 5 days per week.
Washington Parish statistics reflect a general population of 38% disabled persons. WPPT
is working to provide transportation to these and other transit "dependent"
populations. WPPT offers efficient service. Drivers are trained in safety matters and are
courteous.
Advance reservations are required. Some same-day appointments will be scheduled on a
first-come, first-serve basis depending on the availability of seats. Passenger fares are
based on round trip miles. Special discounts are given to frequent riders and passengers
riding in groups. The base fare is $1.50. Fare schedules are posted at various locations
throughout the service area and are available upon request from Washington Parish Public
Transit office locations in Bogalusa and Franklinton.
