Profile of System

In July of 1980, the Cameron Parish Public Transit System was born of necessity. Cameron Parish is extremely rural with no incorporated towns or villages within its boundaries. The parish covers 1,441 square miles and until 1980 supported no form of public transportation. Cameron Parish Public Transit remains the only form of public transportation throughout this vast area. Six population concentrations form the six designated communities. The system is comprised of four vans and is operated on a demand-responsive basis. Two of the four vans provide services to disabled residents.
Cameron Parish Public Transit (CPPT) provides trips to medical facilities, work sites, businesses, financial institutions, senior center sites, and many other activity areas. The transit system is a vital part of the Emergency Preparedness System, providing services in times of natural disasters such as hurricane evacuations and floods. Trips are provided to neighboring parishes on request.
Over the past years CPPT has been the recipient of two separate donations of vehicles from individuals and corporations. The community recognizes the necessity of this program and the benefits it brings to the entire parish.
CPPT manager, dispatcher, and drivers are fully trained, courteous and efficient. Each vehicle is equipped with communication devices, safety equipment and emergency medical supplies. The agency has coordinating agreements with the local hospital, parish health unit, local physicians, out of parish medical clinics, the Cameron Council on Aging/Community Action Agency and the Office of Emergency Preparedness.
